Christchurch is New Zealand's only main city with flat main streets. This makes it the perfect city for cyclists, and indeed they are to be spotted everywhere about town. The closeness of the Port Hills makes for some exciting hill riding if need be, but for a gentle pushbike to the shops, Christchurch is ideal.
The centrally located Hagley Park (a fantastic example of foresight by Christchurch's founding fathers) is idea for both walkers and cyclists wishing to cut through, traffic free, from surrounding suburbs to the heart of the city.
Adjacent to Hagley Park are the Christchurch Botanical Gardens and Museum, two spots that are popular with both locals and tourists alike. Perfect for families, the Botanical Gardens are an ideal place to while away the day with a picnic, some feeding of the (always ravenous!) ducks and then maybe you can move on for some gathering of knowledge throughout the many divisions of the Christchurch Museum.
Outside the Museum's front door you look directly up Worcester Boulevard, a street designated mainly to trams and pedestrians. The Christchurch Arts Centre, with its many quirky cafes, novelty shops, unique handcrafts and weekend markets hugs the side of Worcester Boulevard. This magnificent structure squats in all its grey gothic splendour alongside the bustling street and just asks to be explored.
The Christchurch Art Centre is home to The Court Theatre, Christchurch's most patronised theatre. There is always a show on; check at the information desk for a list of current and coming attractions.
Continue up Worcester Boulevard and you will reach the heart of Christchurch city - or 'town' as it is affectionately known by the locals. Cathedral Square houses the famous Christchurch Cathedral, a week day market, and several hotels, restaurants and eating places.
The Strip is not far away on Oxford Terrace. This is a merry band of upmarket restaurants and bars facing out on to the River Avon. Day time or night time, you will find crowds of merrymakers and diners at the al fresco tables along The Strip.
Two another not-to-be-missed spots are Poplar Lane and SOL Square. Both of these areas are crammed full with restaurants, bars and unique shops. High Street is another quirky rendezvous for the hungry and the shoppers.
Christchurch's outlying suburbs are all within approximately 15 minutes by car from the centre of Christchurch. Real estate within these suburbs is popular with families and students. Most of the larger suburbs have a neighbourhood mall, several of these housing movie theatres, department stores, and a range of shops and cafes.
Christchurch is a gentle city full of tree lined streets, the meandering Avon River, the closely looming Port Hills, and gorgeous gardens.
Christchurch is a truly great place to buy a house.
